OPN Column May 2013: Reflections in Diversity

Combatting Stereotype Threat, Prof Anthony Johnson, University of Maryland and Baltimore County (UMBA) argues in this article on the impact of stereotype:

Stereotype threat is a pervasive and destructive process, and one that could be contributing to the high rate of attrittion among women and minorities in the physical sciences.

He recommends 5 ways to defeat the threat: raise consciousness, affirm your strengths, be receptive to constructive criticism, network and promote yourself.

In his view "Culture and society have unfairly placed the burden for combatting negative stereotypes on minority groups and women - but it's time to be more progressive and, frankly, smarter than tha.t"
