Light-Matter Interactions 2016 - Energizing the world with new materials from continuous and pulsed light research.

This Spring School aims at providing a broad introduction to topics of current interest, in an imperative cross-cutting discipline of science with light

Inspiration and continuation from the international Year of Light 2015 leads us to an introductory and summarizing event of light-matter interactions.

The school presents the latest advances in ultrafast science, including both ultrafast optical technology and the study of ultrafast phenomena. It covers techniques ranging from X-rays to infrared frequencies relevant to applications in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering.

The lectures will broadly focus on two areas:

Ultrashort light pulses to study the evolution of a variety of systems during phase transitions, chemical reactions and structural transformations
Light as an external control parameter to create and manipulate exotic phases of matter that do not occur spontaneously.

When you have attended this school, you can appreciate the power of “light”. You will have obtained a flavor for the immense depth of information that can be obtained with the ultrashort laser pulses (providing sub-fs time resolution). You can contrast the ultrafast phenomena against the continuous wave light, where light is used as control parameter to generate or stabilize out-of-equilibrium phases.
