Building Information

Former Outreach Officer for more than 10 years: Dr. Anna Garry  (Aug. 2010 till Oct. 2020)

Dr. Anna Garry, NCCR MUST outreach officer, has started a new position in the Department of Educational Development and Technology (LET) at ETH Zurich. After more than 10 years in the MUST office, this new job gives her the opportunity to work at ETH until her retirement, after the upcoming finish of the MUST program in 2022.

As the outreach officer in the management team of MUST, Anna’s main emphasis has been supporting efforts to advance women in STEM, including education and training. Highlights of this 10-year effort include the creation of the women professors forum, the women scientist network, and the biennial MUST/RESOLV Gender and Science conferences to better retain and support a diverse community. One goal was to reduce the leaky pipeline, and MUST initiated a fellowship program in physics to better support postdocs during pregnancy and early motherhood, and a new undergraduate peer mentoring program to better welcome female students in physics.

Based on her many interactions with women professors during these years, Anna authored “Inspirational Conversations with Women Professors” (published 2019) to highlight successful women professors in Switzerland. Other highlights in education and training activities include education competitions and outreach tools, conducting continuing professional development workshops for PhD's and postdocs, and realising the NCCR MUST book "A Journey Through Time in Powers of Ten”. Based on this book, we produced an exhibition for show at many scientific outreach events, schools, and universities.

Anna’s contributions for all these highlights have been absolutely essential for their success. Anna was an enthusiastic, always helpful, and fantastic colleague to work with. The MUST team will miss her, and we wish her a great start and continued success in her new position.

Anna's successor in the MUST office is Dr. Korinna Esfeld, who started on October 15, 2020 in Bern. Korinna’s Ph.D. work is in plant science biology. She worked as an Oberassistentin (70%) in the group of Cris Kuhlemeier at the Institute of Plant Sciences of the University of Bern until July 2020. Korinna completed a CAS in Research Management and started in December 2018 as an academic manager in the study committee of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Bern (20%). In addition, she implemented measures in the department of Biology (10%) after an evaluation of the biology teaching program.

A warm welcome to Korinna in the MUST management team and we look forward to working with her!
