Title of presentation: Progress towards Equal Opportunities in the UK Physics Community
Lesley Cohen 13Sept2017
Abstract:
Within the UK the desire to encourage more women into STEM subjects has been the interest of our UK Government with numerous reports produced by the House of Commons over the last decade. In 2007 the UK Physics community initiated by the Institute of Physics, set out a charter called the Juno project, to encourage Physics departments to change their culture around supporting and encouraging women into physics. Shortly thereafter the UK Royal Society launched a project called Athena SWAN, with very similar objectives. In this talk I will describe these projects and the impact they have had on university culture in the intervening period.
Short biography:
Lesley Cohen is a Professor of Solid State Physics at Imperial College London. Her research interests focus primarily on functional magnetic materials including superconductors, semiconductors and magnetic materials. She is currently the Consul for the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Imperial College which is a role involving oversight of appointments and promotion of academic staff across College. She is a recipient of the Imperial College Julia Higgins Award for her contribution to the promotion and support of women in science. In the Physics department she set up and has been involved with the equal opportunities committee for over ten years.
