Scientific Societies for Chemists, Physicists and Engineers
A number of international scientific societies give both scientific news and careers advice. The ones listed below are very useful to professional scientists, and some of them have webpages addressing specifically the experience of women scientists, with interviews and articles on working situations.
Physics
SPIE is the International Society for Optics and Photonics. It has a web page for Women in Optics with an events section, and profiles of women scientists, who give advice on what they needed to know for their career.
OSA is the Optical Society of America. There is a community of women physicists and scientists who have contributed interviews and profiles to this website.
The American Physical Society is one of the largest in the world for physicists. It has an active policy to encourage people to study and work in physics and there is a helpful section on Women in Physics.
Chemistry
ACS is the American Chemical Society which is the largest organization for Chemists in the world.
There is a Swiss Chemical Society which is useful for current developments in European research.
The Royal Chemistry Society in the UK has a large programme of events and networking events for women working in Chemistry and related fields..
Engineering, Science and Industry
In Switzerland SVIN (Schweizerische Vereinigung der Ingenieurinnen) is the Swiss Association of Women Engineers and is a very active organization promoting all women working in science in Switzerland. Scientists from many disciplines are members. There are regular meetings and events.
In Germany Bosch has a well developed programme and network for promoting and profiling women scientists.
In the UK the Women's Engineering Society has been established for 90 years, to inspire women as engineers, scientists and technical leaders. The website gives a great deal of information and news on women working as scientists. Another UK association working towards similar goals is the Women In Science, and Engineering. The studying-in-UK website shows the increase of Female students enrolled in science in the UK.
There is a European Association for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology, which is funded by the EU, and has links to many useful organizations, and funded initiatives.
SIAM is the Society for Industrial and Applied Maths which gives information on the interface between science and industry.
