A very innovative approach for real-time pollen detection and identification was developed at the University Geneva, which is currently being patented. The method combines, for the first time, the advantages of selectivity provided by spectrally resolved information and limited equipment costs.
The goal of the project is to develop a finalized prototype capable of discriminating among the 15 most allergic pollen types encountered in Europe as well as discriminating pollens from spores. This device will constitute the first product of a spin-off of the University of Geneva, which will be created within the first year of the project. The involvement of an academic environment, a spin-off company (named PLAIR) led by the developer of the product and an end-user (MeteoSwiss) representing the market and a potential customer provides to this project a particularly high success probability.



In November 2014, Plair's project "Mobile monitoring of air pollutants" received a recognition prize from Zurich Insurance during Zurich Climate Competition (not listed on the website). The company was officially registered in July 2014 by D. Kiselev and S. Afonina, both former graduate students from Wolf’s group.
