GRC - Ultrafast Phenomena in Cooperative Systems - Coherent and Incoherent Dynamics in Cooperative Nonequilibrium Matter

Program This research conference provides a platform for discussion of nonequilibrium phenomena in condensed matter with collective or cooperative features. The systems of interest exhibit strongly time-dependent properties involving interactions between multiple excitations involving charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom. Often the cooperative nature of these systems leads to exotic nonequilibrium states or phase transitions. The conference will in particular focus on the role of coherence in such dynamics, and also on how entropy emerges both temporally and spatially resulting in a loss of coherence.

One important component of the conference will be the application of new methods of ultrafast spectroscopy and scattering to better understand these issues experimentally. These methods include the application of coherent, short pulses of light spanning the frequency range from THz to x-rays, as well as electron and photoelectron probes. These tools offer the potential for new insights into the dynamics of cooperative condensed matter, in that they provide methods to address selectively different components of condensed matter systems. Another important component of discussion during the conference will be progress in the theoretical understanding of dynamics in cooperative systems. This involves the development of new tools in theory that can both characterize nonequilibrium states and provide guidance for searches for new phenomena unique to systems out of thermodynamic equilibrium.
